#142 plastic bag free for a week

UPDATE 23.07.09

Did you know that the City of Sydney Council has turned their old synthetic lamp-post banners (the ones you see flying on George St, etc) into carry bags? I grabbed one at a free cycling breakfast a couple of months ago. If you want to make your own, you can buy some secondhand banners from Reverse Garbage in Marrickville, where I spotted some from Earth Festival.

UPDATE 20.07.09

Today rescued 5 plastic takeaway containers that my flatmates threw into the garbage, washed them out w/ detergent and into the cupboard they go for re-use!

It's easy not using new plastic bags!  There's a billion in my cupboard under the sink. Wonder how long I can make them last?

I'm investigating ordering a local fruit and veg box from the Leichhardt organic buyers group which willl save me using any supermarket plastic bags - go the recycled cardboard box. Ah delicious vegies.

I'm going to try this out, and take it a step further.

1. I'm not going to use plastic bags for a week

2. I'll avoid using any new plastic containers for a week and if necessary only re-use containers that are languishing in the cupboard

cardboard fruit & veggie box

Thanks to Ebony from Hello Sandwich for this picture that reminded me it's high time I sorted myself out with a weekly fruit and veg organic box from my local co-op. I admit that plastic is clearly visible in this picture but you can imagine plastic's omission from the general scene!

One trick ive been trying is to NEVER accept plastic bags (so sometimes i juggle a fair few items from my local grocery store which can be fun!) and instead i collect the paper bags from wine bottles, bread and so forth and try to keep to one small paper bag of rubbish a week. Ive found it quite effective in keeping my waste down to a minimum. And no plastic bags to be seen!

Onya Kate! I've been carrying a calico bag in my handbag for a while & it has reduced my plastic bag usage heaps.

I donate my used plastic bags to the Salvation Army shop across the road from me

Good on you Kate. Did you know that there is an organic veg coop in Randwick? check out Randwick Organic Buyers Group on the web. You can try a 'taster'box before you join, then as a member you buy any week you want, no obligation. Ciao!

In south Australia there is a ban on checkout plastic bags so everyone has to bring a recyclable one when shopping
